Volunteering at St Sidwell's
St Sidwell's
Centre couldn't function without the support of
volunteers. There are currently around 30 people
involved in one way or another, helping with all
aspects of running the Centre.
Those who want to can also become involved in decision
making for the Centre. We have regular volunteers'
meetings, and some volunteers sit on the Project
Committee and other sub-groups.
We cover volunteers' expenses, so it doesn't cost
anything to get involved here. Anyone can get involved:
no-one is too young or too old. Many of our volunteers
have a disability or suffer from ill health, but
whoever you are, if you're up for it we can find
a way to get you involved.
Opportunities:
Volunteers have many different roles at St Sidwell's
Centre. If you are interested in any of them, phone
Andi Tobe the Development Worker on 01392 666223. She will invite you in for an informal chat, and
a chance to find out if volunteering here is for
you.

Snack
Bar:
Volunteers contribute
to the smooth running of a busy Snack Bar on Wednesdays
and Thursdays, working as part of a team to provide
healthy and nutritious light meals, drinks and snacks.
Snack Bar Volunteers all undertake food hygiene
training (1 day course) and are provided with protective
clothing.
They help with all
aspects of running the café, including shopping,
setting up, preparing food, serving customers, handling
cash, clearing tables, operating the washing up
machine, clearing up and closing up at the end of
the day, etc. Other volunteers
help by making cakes for the Snack Bar. Cakes can
be prepared either in the kitchen here, or in your
own home. We pay for the ingredients.
Reception:
Reception volunteers are often
the first people that visitors meet when they come
into the centre. Reception volunteers meet and
greet the public, help with internet café
users, help with enquiries regarding room bookings, membership
enquiries, photocopying, cash handling etc.

Administrators:
We sometimes need people with
Admin experience to help in our busy office. Admin volunteers help with various
tasks including record keeping, data inputting,
answering the phone, typing, archiving, photocopying,
filing, envelope stuffing etc. It helps if you have
good computer or keyboard skills and plenty of experience
of working in an office environment.
Person
Friday:
Volunteers also help with practical
tasks that need doing around the place, such as
preparing rooms for groups, keeping notice boards
up to date, fixing things, running errands, helping
with recycling, general troubleshooting etc. You need to be fairly fit for
this role which includes light lifting. Good practical
skills are a big advantage.

Committee
Members:
Our Project Committee is the
body that oversees developments at St Sidwell's
Centre. It consists of various individuals
representing different organisations that we work
with, as well as Local Residents and Volunteers.
We are always interested to hear
from anyone who would like to become involved as
a committee member. The Committee meets quarterly,
with occasional additional meetings of sub groups.
Volunteer vacancies available, particularly for
someone with Financial Management experience who
would like to take on the Treasurer role.

Two of the groups we
host also involve volunteers :
EX4
Positive Play Group:
Volunteers help in this busy
parent & toddler group on Tuesdays, Thursdays
and Fridays between 9.30am and 12.30pm. Volunteers
help set up the session, prepare refreshments, help
during the activities and clear away equipment.
Hikmat:
The Hikmat (Wisdom) Social Contact
Centre is a Black Minority Ethnic elders project
which is run by the Olive Tree Association.
The drop in day centre is open on Tuesday for the
Chinese elders and Thursday for the Muslim elders.
The day centre is open to older people in and around
the Exeter area who are black, Asian or from an
ethnic minority.
Transport can be provided in
the Exeter area to and from St Sidwell's. The centre
provides a subsidized cooked lunch, which can be
enjoyed in a comfortable and supportive environment.
We also have a women's only room
on Thursdays. We offer help with locating services
that give information and advice on a range of matters
including financial advice, pensions and health
awareness talks.
Organized social events such
as trips are also arranged, Hikmat offers an excellent
opportunity for social contact in a friendly environment
which is appropriately staffed. Hikmat enables people
to form new friendships and contacts in a relaxed
social cultural environment.
